The Associate in Wilderness Medicine is a certificate program established by the University of Utah School of Medicine to bring students to a high level of knowledge and competency in wilderness medicine. When completed students will have a very broad and deep understanding of important and critical subjects in wilderness medicine. This will allow them to practice and also to teach all to stay safe and healthy as they explore this beautiful world. This certificante is recognized internationally as a prestigious certificate granted by a trusted medical school.

 

First: You must first complete just one of the following modules

We want you to have a baseline understanding of wilderness medicine. By completing one of the following, you will have a foundation knowledge that is essential to prevention and treatment of backcountry problems. You do not need to do more than one. They are very similar. All of these courses are found and can be completed on this site.

 

AWLS - Advanced Wilderness Life Support The important AWLS certificate provides the important concepts of wilderness medicine principles. It is designed for students with a medical background.

WFR - Wilderness First Responder This is a course for outdoor guides and non medical professionals to give them a foundation of outdoor medical knowledge and skills.

BWLS - Basic Wilderness Life Support This a course that provides a foundation for outdoor sports and activities. it is designed for all people who want to learn about all recreational activities.

 
 

Second: You must complete all of the following modules.

Studying these modules will give you important specific knowledge related to specific outdoor sports, rescue and travel medicine.

 

Backpacking Medicine This is an important course for anyone that is going to treat injuries or prevent problems in hiking, backpacking or trekking.

 

SAR - Search and Rescue This is the important course which teaches the principles of lost person bahviour, search techniques and more.

 
 

WTTM -Wilderness Travel and Tropical Medicine This course covers the important aspects of traveling to places where knowledge of travel and tropical medicine is important.

 

To start, you simply begin your studies. Register for each coiurse and you will be given the passcodes to take the examinations.  When you have passed these exams, keep track of your scores, then click on the I have Finished icon to obtain a password to print your certificate. When click on the Print Your Cerrtificate icon and follow the instructions. A certificate will be emailed to you at that time.
